Frédérick Roy Suspended Fifteen Games for Attack on Juniors' Vincent Bourgeois
You may recall I had written that during the last game played between the Montreal Juniors and the Quebec Ramparts that towards the end of this game Patrick Roy's son, Frédérique got into a shoving match with Montreal's Vincent Bourgeois.
While Bourgeois valiantly did not back down from Roy's tauntings and aggression, he clearly showed no signs of wanting to take the scuffle further than the typical "you shove me, I'll shove you" scenario that is par for the course in a hockey game.
But Roy, who has flirted with the wild side on more than a few occasions must have either been frustrated at the non action on Bourgeois' part, or perhaps, was upset that the Montreal Juniors were in the process of stealing his dad's thunder on a night where the Juniors paid homage to King Patrick for his on ice achievements. Or both. Either way, his crosscheck to the face of Bourgeois did not go unnoticed on that night as the refs quickly and justly served Roy with a major penalty and game misconduct.
The QMJHL, after reviewing the play via videotape and after a brief investigation also decided that the gratuitous act on Roy's part deserved a disciplinary action and they ruled that Roy should be suspended for 15 games. Kudos to the "Q" for sending the right message throughout the league as well as waiting for the Patrick Roy Jersey retirement weekend to subside before announcing the ruling.
While no reasons, precedence nor explanations were given, read the QMJHL release for the official announcement.
