Captain Nevio Pizzolitto Back with Impact for 2011
The Montreal Impact announced today that team captain Nevio Pizzolitto (34) will be returning in 2011.
This is welcomed news for Impact fans who are wondering where the familiarity factor was going to come from, especially after an earlier announcement by the team that Impact fan favourites Eduardo Sebrango, Patrick Leduc and Rocco Placentino would not be offered contracts this year.
In this transition year heading towards the MLS in 2012, Pizzolitto, a veteran of 17 seasons in American second division, (16 with Montreal) will definitely be a key agent in the transition phase for the Impact as they gradually move towards a bolstered roster for 2012.
Pizzolitto, ranked second in club history in games played (276), games started (234) and minutes played (21,769) is not necessarily counting out a potential shot at the MLS: “I would like to make the jump with the club to the MLS, but for now, I’m looking at things one year at a time. After the 2011 season, I will have to be honest with myself and see if I am able and willing to continue playing.”
Technical director Nick De Santis, who is will be in Fort Lauderdale next week for the MLS Combine scouting university players agreed that the move to retain Pizzolitto was important to the fans and the team. “It was important to us that Nevio returned to our lineup next season. We need experienced players. Nevio will play an important role during the transition season towards Major League Soccer. We will have to manage his playing time well to ensure he is healthy for the entire season. We will then examine whether he’ll be able to play with the club in the MLS.”
With Pizzolitto’s signing, the total number of Impact players under contract for the 2011 season is now at 12 players.
