CANADIENS SIGN FREE AGENT JAROSLAV SPACEK TO A THREE-YEAR CONTRACT

Written by Nick Murdocco. Posted in Blogs - Nick Murdocco

The Montreal Canadiens have just announced the signing by Jaroslav Spacek, formerly of the Buffalo Sabres to a 3 year, 11.5 million dollar contract.

Spacek is a good puck moving defenceman that has been consistently a plus player, going plus-25 throughout his 10 year NHL career. Spacek, at 5' 11" 204 pounds is not necessarily the behemoth the Habs were looking for after most likely losing Mike Komisraek to free agency, but for what it's worth, he is a whole 3 inches taller and 6 pounds heavier than Francis Bouillon, another UFA the Habs have considered as a "second priority"

At 35 years old, one has to wonder if Spacek still has 3 more years of solid, responsible hockey in him, for if he decides to retire between today and the end of his contract with the Habs, his salary would still remain on the team's cap hit until the end of the contract's duration.

MONTREAL (July 1st, 2009) – Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today the signing of defenceman Jaroslav Spacek to a three-year contract (2009-10 to 2011-12). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Last season, Spacek, 35, led the Buffalo Sabres defencemen in scoring with 45 points in 80 games (8 goals, 37 assists). He registered 38 penalty minutes, maintained a +2 differential and an average time of ice of 22:16 mins.

The Rokycany, Czech Republic native will be entering his 14th NHL season in 2009-10. He played in a total of 701 career regular season games in the NHL with Florida, Chicago, Edmonton, Columbus and Buffalo. He registered 303 points (73 goals, 230 assists), amassed 515 penalty minutes and a +25 differential.

The 5’11’’, 204-pound defenceman was a 5th round selection by the Panthers, 117th overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He joined the Sabres as a free agent on July 5th, 2006.
