Surprise! Canadiens call up Shawn Belle from Hamilton
After the Canadiens recently announced that Yannick Weber was reassigned to Hamilton, all, including yours truly, expected the subsequent announcement to be that new free agent acquisition Marc-André Bergeron would be called up to join the Habs’ blue line. This was not the case.
It would appear that Bergeron is not quite where coach Jacques Martin wants him to be, conditioning and timing wise as he has only played in one game for the Bulldogs after signing with the Canadiens.
Martin also made mention earlier today that Bergeron wasn’t necessarily the first choice to replace Weber so while Bergeron gets into game shape, the 6’1”, 240 pound Belle will get a shot to shine.
Why not Mathieu Carle? Good question, however rumour has it he’s nursing a shoulder ailment.
Read on for the Habs’ official release on Belle’s summoning.
MONTREAL (October 13, 2009) – The Montreal Canadiens announced today that defenseman Shawn Belle has been recalled from the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs.
Belle, 24, participated in his second training camp with the Canadiens last September. He played in three of the club’s seven preseason games, before being released on September 21. The 6’01’’, 240 lbs defenseman played in 60 games with the Bulldogs last season.
He registered 13 points (3 goals, 10 assists), posted a +19 plus/minus differential and totalled 93 penalty minutes.
Belle was acquired from the Minnesota Wild on July 11, 2008. He played in nine career NHL regular season games in 2006-07.
