Buffalo Sabres End Habs 4 Game Winning Streak with Easy 5-1 Victory
The Montreal Canadiens looked like a team possessed as they came on strong in the 1st period of their trading deadline day game against the Buffalo Sabres, but in the end, they would end up being possessed BY the Sabres who skated away with an easy 5-1 Victory.
Montreal outshot Buffalo 18-10 in the first frame, but as per usual, the curse of the Quebec-born goaltenders had struck again as Patrick Lalime, replacing injured Ryan Miller went on to stymie the Habs and almost would have had a shutout, were it not for a futile goal scored at 18:54 of the third period by Tomas Plekanec.
The Buffalo Sabres were opportunistic as much as they were aggressive on the puck and the Habs players the whole night. They managed to disturb Carey Price, who was making his debut after sitting out since February 19th and made his return as difficult as it could be by always planting men in front of the net and either blocking his view, or deflecting shots past him.
Montreal, seemingly defeated once their first period flurry was thwarted and ended the period behind by one, was unable to muster any serious attacks on Lalime who was as good as he needed to be to keep his team ahead. The Habs were 0 for 6 on the recently revamped power-play that saw success in the last 5 games, but the Sabres not only killed off those penalties but got a short handed goal and had 2 power play goals of their own as they outclassed the Habs on a night that all players should have been content that their jobs were secure for the rest of the season.
While the score was lopsided, with the exception of Derek Roy's second goal (the wrister glove hand side) and Paul Gaustad's breakaway short handed goal, you can not blame Carey Price for this loss. His whole team had provided him more turnovers than the local bakery and his forwards were unable to capitalise on any offensive chances they were given. One would hope that Price gets a second chance against the Atlanta Thrashers on Friday.
