Brian Gionta Now A Montreal Canadien

Add former Devil Brian Gionta to the list of UFA's that are now Montreal Canadiens. Gionta, it is reported, has just signed a five-year, $25 million deal with the Montreal Canadiens.

With every player, there are some up sides and some not-so-up sides, as is the case with Gionta who had, until now, spent all of his NHL career with the New Jersey Devils.

Gionta had a career best 48 goals and 41 assists back in 2005-06 but before and since has averaged about 20 goals and over 40 points per season.

He has won a Stanley with the Devils in 2002-03 and was a linemate of newly acquired Scott Gomez for 4 years.

He is a right winger, which the Habs are in short supply of but the one thing that is still leaving me perplexed, not that I disagree with this signing, is that Gionta, at 5 feet 7 inches, is considered one of the smallest players in the NHL. So much for getting that big power forward, Bob.

The Montreal Canadiens hove not yet issued their official statements on either the Hal Gill or the Gionta signings, which is either an indication that another trade is forthcoming or that the paperwork just hasn't gone through yet. Being Montreal, I'll let you speculate.

The Montreal Italian community can surely hold their heads high today. Imagine the pride when a Habs line-up consisting of Gionta, Cammalleri, Pacciorety and D'Agostini take to the ice. That's Amore.
