Andreas Engqvist signs three-year, two-way contract with Montreal Canadiens
The Montreal Canadiens, according to Bob Gainey prior to the entry draft, were looking for a big centre to bolster their line-up. The good news is they found one. The not so good news is that he is a relative unknown with no NHL experience, and may or may not play for the big team this year.
Coming off an injury, Engqvist only played 31 games while playing in the Swedish Elite League, but managed 9 goals and 7 assists in that span. At 6-3, 196 pounds, he would definitley not be the heaviest, with many of this teammates tipping the scales at over 200 pounds, but would be be tied with Big Georges Laraque for tallest forward on the team.
Terms were not disclosed and one would assume he will start the season in Hamilton so allow him to adapt to the style of play and work out any potential kinks in that recently operated wrist.

Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today the signing of forward Andreas Engqvist to a three-year, two-way contract (2009-10 to 2011-2012). As per Club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Last season, the 6-3, 196-pound centreman totaled 16 points (9 goals, 7 assists) and 12 penalty minutes in 31 games with Djurgardens IF of the Swedish Elite League, before a wrist injury forced him out of the lineup for the team’s last 24 regular-season games.
, 21, concluded in 2008-09 his third complete season in the Swedish Elite League, having played a total of 126 games. Since joining Djurgarden IF in 2005-2006, the native of Stockholm amassed 32 points (15 goals, 17 assists) and served 44 penalty minutes.
Engqvist participated in the Canadiens’ development camp last week at the Bell Sports Complex in Brossard.
