November 20th vs. Halifax Mooseheads

Juniors win in a shootout 4 to 3

 

The Montreal Juniors opened a brief two-game homestand tonight against the Halifax Mooseheads.  The Juniors won a tough battle in a shootout as they defeated the Mooseheads by the score of 4 to 3.  Carl Gelinas, Linden Bahm, and Tomas Knotek scored in the losing effort for the Mooseheads.  Jeremy Gouchie led the way for the Juniors with a goal, an assist, and the shootout winner.  Hubert Genest and Nicolas Chouinard also scored for the Juniors.   

In the first period, the Mooseheads opened the scoring when winger Carl Gelinas tapped home the rebound at 2:12 from center Guillaume Pelletier and defenseman Sawyer Hannay.  Halifax jumped to a two-goal lead when forwards Tomas Knotek and Travis Randell made the perfect set up for winger Linden Bahm as he scored right in front for his fifth of the year on the power play at 11:02. 

The Mooseheads suffered a set back in the second when goaltender Joel Grondin replaced Mathieu Corbeil-Theriault at 1:47, who left the game with a hand injury.  Suddenly, the Juniors found momentum as they scored three unanswered goals in the second.  They cut the deficit to one when defenseman Hubert Genest fired the puck past Grondin from Matthew Brenton and Jeremy Gouchie at 3:27.  These three players got on the score sheet again.  Gouchie captalized on the rebound left by Corbeil-Theriault, who came back into action after receiving medical attention, after he kicked away Brenton’s shot with the left pad at 6:36.  Genest also earned an assist.  Juniors took lead when captain Nicolas Chouinard one-timed Guillaume Asselin’s pass on the power play at 18:20.   

Halifax tied the game in the third as Tomas Knotek snapped one past Jake Allen on the breakaway at 13:25 and forced the game to overtime with both teams even at 3 goals each. The game was eventually decided in a shootout.  Juniors Jeremy Gouchie got the shootout winner as the Juniors defeat the Mooseheads 4 to 3. 

Juniors goalie Jake Allen was stellar in the winning effort as he stopped 32 shots.  Halifax goaltender Mathieu Corbeil-Theriault denied 30 shots and gave up two goals in the loss.  His replacement Joel Grondin made 2 saves and gave up a goal when Corbeil-Theriault was receiving medical attention for his hand.  The Mooseheads are now 5-18-0-2 while the Montreal Juniors improve to 12-12-0-1.

Juniors next opponent will be the Shawinigan Cataractes in the Auditorium tomorrow at 4:05PM.  The Montreal Juniors will travel east to Quebec City as they match up against the Quebec Remparts on Sunday, November 22nd.  The Juniors will host the Gatineau Olympiques on Friday, November 27th at 7:35PM.

 

November 21st vs. Shawinigan Cataractes

The Juniors fall to the Cataractes 3 to 1

Montreal, November 21st –  The Montreal Juniors concluded this two-game homestand against the Shawinigan Cataractes with a loss by the score of 3 to 1. It was a close game until the very end when Shawinigan added two quick goals in the last few minutes of the third.  Cataractes goaltender Gabriel Girard led the way with 23 saves.  Juniors forward Nicolas Chouinard scored in the loss.  Pierre-Alexandre Vandall, Toni Ritter, and Michael Bournival contributed the three goals for the Cataractes.   

The only goal in first period came from Juniors captain Nicolas Chouinard, who fired one past goaltender Gabriel Girard for his tenth of the year from Guillaume Asselin and Louis-Marc Aubry at 16:52.  The Cataractes tied the game in the second when Pierre-Alexandre Vandall deflected in Dominik Schlumpf’s wrister at 10:35 for his fourteenth of the year.  Shawinigan forward Toni Ritter scored the go-head goal in the third as he tapped home the rebound after Berube made the kick save on Maxime Legault’s shot at 16:42.  The Cataractes put the game away when forward Michael Bournival added the empty-netter at 19:56 of the third.    

Juniors goalie Jean-Francois Berube, the third star of the match, was sharp in loss as he denied 32 shots.  Cataractes goaltender Gabriel Girard stopped 23 shots as he led his team to victory.  The Montreal Juniors are now 12-13-0-1 and the Cataractes improve to 12-10-1-2.

The Montreal Juniors will now head east to Quebec City as they face the Quebec Remparts tomorrow afternoon.  The Juniors will be back in the Auditorium as they host the Gatineau Olympiques on Friday, November 27th at 7:35PM.  Montreal will visit Rimouski as the Juniors take on the Oceanic on Sunday, November 29th.       

 

                      MONTREAL JUNIORS VS. QUEBEC REMPARTS

Quebec beats Montreal 5 to 2

Montreal, November 22nd, 2009 – The Montreal Juniors played their third game in three days against the Quebec Remparts this afternoon and lost by the score of 5 to 2.  It was a close match at the end of the first, but the Remparts pulled away with two goals in the second period.  Juniors forward Pier-Antoine Dion scored the two Juniors goals.  Kelsey Tessier, Samuel Groulx, David Gilbert, Maxime Gravel, and Dmitri Kugryshev scored the five Rempart goals.  

It was an action-filled first period.  Remparts forward Kelsey Tessier opened the scoring with a penalty shot goal at 4:38.  The Juniors tied the game on the power play when winger Pier-Antoine Dion first one past Gagnon for his tenth of the year at 6:22 from Jeremy Gouchie and Eliezer Sherbatov.  Just two minutes later, Quebec added two quick goals Samuel Groulx and David Gilbert.  Dion scored his second of the game on another power play from Gouchie and Hubert Genest as he cut the deficit to one at 14:47.
  
In the second, the Remparts extended their lead as Maxime Gravel and Dmitri Kugryshev got on the score sheet.  There was no scoring in the third.  However, the physical play certainly stepped up as four fights broke out in the last ten minutes of the game.  The Remparts defeat the Juniors by the score of 5 to 2.   

Juniors goalie Jake Allen gave up 3 goals on 7 shots.  His replacement, Jean-Francois Berube, made 24 saves.  Remparts goaltender Jean-Philippe Gagnon won it for the Remparts as he stopped 25 shots.  Montreal’s record stands at 12-14-0-1 and the Remparts improve to 17-5-2-3.

Juniors will be back in the Auditorium as they host the Gatineau Olympiques on Friday, November 27th at 7:35PM.  Then the Juniors will have a back-to-back series against the Rimouski Oceanic.  Montreal will first visit Rimouski as the Juniors take on the Oceanic at 3PM Sunday, November 29th. The Juniors will return to Verdun to face the Oceanic on Friday, December 4th at 7:35PM.
