Montreal, Januray 23rd, 2010 – The Montreal Juniors hosted the top-ranked CHL team in nation, the Saint John Sea Dogs, this afternoon in the Verdun Auditorium. The Juniors put on an impressive performance and defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs by the score of 6 to 4. The Juniors penalty kill was excellent as they scored two shorthanded goals. Forwards Jeremy Gouchie and Matthew Brenton led the charge for Montreal as they each had two goals and an assist.
In the first period, Nicolas Petersen got the Sea Dogs going when he tallied his twenty-seventh of the year at 3:34. The Juniors stormed back when Matthew Brenton continued his hot scoring as he tied the game up at 14:38. Four minutes later, Louis-Marc Aubry put the puck past Karel St-Laurent and gave the Juniors the lead against the best junior team in nation.
The Juniors would continue their impressive showing when Jeremy Gouchie scored a shorthanded goal from Matthew Brenton as the Sea Dogs fell into a 3 to 1 deficit in the second.
The pressure was kept on by the Juniors when forward David Rose would stretched the Juniors lead to three goals at 5:45. Sea Dogs Mike Hoffman would cut the deficit to two goals at 6:59. But the Juniors kept on coming as Matthew Brenton scored his second of the night, a shorthanded goal, which was also his third goal in two games.
The Juniors got into penalty trouble late in the third and Sea Dogs capitalized as they cashed in two goals from Mike Hoffman and Nicolas Petersen. However, that was not enough as Juniors Jeremy Gouchie added the empty-netter for the insurance goal. The Montreal Juniors pulled out a huge upset and defeated the best team in the league, the Saint John Sea Dogs by the score of 6 to 4.
Juniors goaltender Jean-Francois Berube was excellent between the pipes as he stopped 35/39 shots in the win. Sea Dogs goalie Karel St-Laurent denied rejected 24/29 shots in the loss. The Juniors record is now at 24-20-0-3 and the Sea Dogs record is 39-8-1-0.
The Juniors will now go on a six-game road trip. The first stop will be the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies on a back-to-back series, which will take place Thursday and Friday. The next home game will be on February 12th when the Juniors take on the Val-d’Or Foreurs at 7:35PM.
