Juniors Can't Close As Gatineau Wins Game 5

Montreal Sports - Montreal Juniors

The Montreal Juniors dropped game 5 to the Gatineau Olympiques by a 3-2 score at the Verdun Auditorium. After sweeping both games in Gatineau this  past week, the Juniors were looking to close out the best-of-seven series but it now shifts back to Gatineau tomorrow night, with the Juniors still holding a 3-2 series lead.

The evening did not start off as hoped for Montreal as a bad bounce behind the Juniors’ net landed on Gatineau’s Denis Kindl’s stick, allowing him 3 chances to to tap a bouncing back past Jean-Francois Bérubé. This opened the scoring just under two minutes into the game.

In the second, an early power play opportunity for the Olympiques resulted in a Christian Ouellet goal to give Gatineau a 2-0 lead early. This goal seemed to awaken Montreal who was quick to strike back less than 90 seconds later.  Veteran forward Matthew Brenton knocked a loose puck under Maxime Clermont to cut the deficit to one goal. With the momentum shifting all in Montreal’s favor, the Juniors continued to press and with just under seven minutes left, Brenton notched his second of the game by redirecting a David Stitch slap shot from the point to tie the score. Montreal’s lead and momentum would be shortlived, however, as Gatineau’s Joshua Domingues retored Gatineau’s lead only 83 seconds later.

Despite a flurry of shots and chances as time expired, the Juniors could not score the equalizing goal as they fell 3-2 at home and failed to end Gatineau’s season. The Juniors now lead the best of seven series 3 games to 2 and will look to close it out in Gatineau tomorrow night and if necessary, game 7 will be played at the Verdun Auditorium on Tuesday, March 30th at 7:35
