With the Olympic break officially under way, the Montreal Canadiens announced that David Desharnais, Tom Pyatt and P.K. Subban have been assigned to the Hamilton Bulldogs.
While many can justify the return of forwards Pyatt and Desharnais, who will no longer be necessary after the break as forwards Pouliot and Andrei Kostitsyn should be back in the line-up, Subban’s reassignment probably raised a few eyebrows. It shouldn’t have.
Although Subban gave many of the Habs’ faithful something to cheer about in his recent two game stint against the Philadelphia Flyers, his call-back only makes sense, even though he was one of the only bright spots during the Canadiens’ back to back losses.
Subban had been called up to join the Canadiens as an insurance policy as Andrei Markov was described as having a lower body injury, Paul Mara not game ready and Josh Gorges’ status as uncertain. By the end of the Olymoic break, all wounds should be healed and PK will most likely finish off his season in Hamilton. In the meantime, the Canadiens have decided to keep him in game shape during the Olympic break.
There is no doubt, however, that Subban gave the Montreal fans, as well as the NHL, a glimpse of what is to come from the young, talented defenseman who showed flashes of skill, excitement and bravado that had the crowd on the edge of their seats every time he touched the puck. I for one, can not wait for the day Subban has a permanent spot on the Habs' blue line.
