2010 EASTERN CONFERENCE SEMIFINAL STORYLINES

Montreal Sports - Montreal Canadiens

NEW YORK (April 29, 2010) -- To support your coverage of the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs, following are storylines for the Eastern Conference Semifinal series:

#4 PITTSBURGH PENGUINS vs. #8 MONTREAL CANADIENS

How They Got Here

The fourth-seeded Penguins withstood a strong challenge from the #5 Ottawa Senators, capturing the Eastern Conference Quarter-Final series in six games. The Penguins won all three of their road games, highlighted by a stirring comeback in Game 6 that turned a 3-0 deficit halfway through the second period into a 4-3 overtime win on a goal by Pascal Dupuis.

The Canadiens made history by becoming the first #8 seed to win a playoff series in which it trailed three games to one, taking down the top-ranked Washington Capitals in a seven-game thriller. Goaltender Jaroslav Halak backstopped the Canadiens to victories in Games 5-7, stopping 131 of 134 shots (.978). Michael Cammalleri sparked the offense, tallying points in each of the first six games and leading the club with 10 points (five goals, five assists) in seven games.

Halak and Ovechkin Post Game 7 Video

Montreal Sports - Montreal Canadiens

There is no doubt that most of the post series media and fan talk will be centered around Jaroslav Halak and Alexander Ovechkin. Halak is the undisputed hero of the Montreal Canadiens in their 1st round victory over the heavily favored Washington Capitals. Halak stoped 131 of 134 shots to lead Montreal from 3 games down to help beat the Capitals 2-1 in game 7. For his part, Ovechkin, who had 5 goals and 10 points in the series, had not scored since game 5.Videos are courtesy of NHL.com

EXCITING OPENING ROUND CONCLUDES WITH CAPITALS-CANADIENS SHOWDOWN

Montreal Sports - Montreal Canadiens

NEW YORK (April 27, 2010) -- The exciting, unpredictable and hotly-contested opening round of the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs reaches its dramatic conclusion Wednesday night when the Washington Capitals host the Montreal Canadiens in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference Quarter-Final series (7 p.m., ET, VERSUS, TSN, RDS).

This marks the Capitals' fourth consecutive seven-game series, one short of the record the Colorado Avalanche set with five straight Game 7s from 2001 through 2003. Washington has hosted each of its previous three series-deciding games, dropping a 3-2 overtime decision to Philadelphia in 2008 and splitting a pair of games in 2009: a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers in the Conference Quarter-Finals and a 6-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Conference Semifinals.

The Canadiens will be traveling to a city other than Boston to contest a Game 7 for the first time since they captured the Stanley Cup at Chicago in 1971. Montreal also is attempting to overcome a 3-1 series deficit successfully for the second time in franchise history; the first was a victory over the Bruins in the 2004 Conference Quarter-Finals.

Nine players who dressed for the Canadiens' most recent Game 7, a 5-0 win over the Bruins in 2008, are still on the roster: forwards Tomas Plekanec, Andrei Kostitsyn, Sergei Kostitsyn and Maxime Lapierre; defensemen Josh Gorges, Andrei Markov and Roman Hamrlik; and goaltenders Jaroslav Halak and Carey Price.

Halak, who has yet to appear in a Stanley Cup Playoff Game 7, made 53 saves in Monday's Game 6 victory over the Capitals -- the third-most in a playoff game ending in regulation since the statistic was first officially recorded in 1968.

MOST SAVES IN NON-OVERTIME PLAYOFF GAME (since 1968)

Date        Score        Goaltender        Saves
5/24/1996        PIT 2 at FLA 5        Tom Barrasso, Pit        56
4/ 8/1980        TOR 3 at MIN 6        Jiri Crha, Tor        55
4/26/2010        WSH 1 at MTL 4        Jaroslav Halak, Mtl        53

4/26/1996        WPG 3 at DET 1        Nikolai Khabibulin, Wpg        51

Overall, 129 playoff series have gone to seven games since the NHL introduced the best-of-seven format in 1939. The home team has won 80 (.620).

Bulldogs' PK Subban to Play Game 6 Vs Ovechkin and Caps

Montreal Sports - Montreal Canadiens

The Habs have just announced that they have called up D-man PK Subban from the Hamilton Bulldogs in time to play for Game 6 of the NHL round 1 playoffs.

The Canadiens had one more call-up option left and the timing seems right to use it now as the Bulldogs just eliminated the Manitoba Moose last night, while the Habs are in a do-or-die situation as they are behind 3-2 in this best of seven series with the Washington Capitals.
