Meet the Roughriders

Montreal Sports - Montreal Alouettes

Sean Campbell, from the Team 990, is on his way to Calgary to cover the 97th Grey Cup match between the Montreal Alouettes and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Sean will be blogging regularly, and The Franchise will link you to it so that you don't miss any of his great insight and hard work:

Calvillo named Offensive Player of the Week

Montreal Sports - Montreal Alouettes

We knew Anthony Calvillo wanted to not just win against the BC Lions, but make a statement in their win that the Alouettes will steamroll through teams on their way to only their 2nd Grey Cup in 7 attempts. Well, the CFL was certainly impressed as the league named Calvillo their Offensive Player of the Week. I doubt Calvillo will spend any time at all thinking about this award, since the only one he has eyes for will be to win the big win in Calgary. Read on for the press release:

Alouettes Dominate Lions in East Final

Montreal Sports - Montreal Alouettes

It's one thing to win a playoff game to get into the Grey Cup finals, it's another when it comes off a record tying performance of 5 TD's and a 38 point margin. As predicted on this morning's episode of The Franchise on The Team 990, the Alouettes have made a point of making statements at critical points all season, and their first game of the playoffs is just another example. Much ado was made of KC Printers holding the reins for the Lions offense, but this was a player who simply took full advantage of exploiting his former team's weak areas in leading the Lions to a win over the Hamilton TigerCats. While Gary Whittaker from The Franchise had predicted a 28 point margin victory, the 56-18 win this Sunday afternoon was more than even he expected.

17 Als named Eastern All-Stars

Montreal Sports - Montreal Alouettes

We all knew the Alouettes were the best team this year in the CFL, but when 17 Alouettes were named All-Stars marking a new high in league history, the exclamation point has now been made to end what has been a record high for the Alouettes this regular season. Calvillo, backed by a MVP worthy season, led the Alouettes to a Franchise best record of 15 wins in 18 games. Kicker Duval did his part by getting a new CFL record in points with 242.

Damon Duval Named CFL Player of the Week

Montreal Sports - Montreal Alouettes

Als press release:

Alouettes' punter/kicker Damon Duval has been named the Canadian Football League's Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 19, his third such honour this season.

Duval set a new CFL record with 242 points in a season after completing seven field goals - a personal high - and three converts in the Alouettes' 42-17 win over the Argonauts last week in Toronto. He also beat his own team record for most field goals in a season of 51, established in 2006, with 55.

Cornerbacks Mark Estelle and Paul Woldu were named runners up for defensive & Canadian honours, respectively.

Introducing Campbell's Blog on the Alouettes

Montreal Sports - Montreal Alouettes

One of the hardest working people at The Team 990, Sean Campbell, is also active on the blogsphere with his take on the Alouettes and the CFL with www.missedfieldgoal.blogspot.com. We will be brining you his take on all things Canadian Football!

**************************

Since it's a few hours before week 19 Kickoff, Might as well throw some fearless Predictions out on MFG. It's the biggest week of 2009 for 6 of the leagues 8 teams, who's going to step up and who's going to fall down.

Edmonton in B.C. Friday 10:30pm: I like B.C. for two main reasons 1- Edmonton has trouble facing anyone but Toronto the last two months and 2- the Eskimos are battling the flu bug. The losing team can still jump over to the East in the cross-over but I don't think either Wally Buono or Richie Hall will be relying on a Winnipeg loss. Casey Printers may or may not be the answer but he'll give the Lions enough offense to pull out the win. BC 28, Edm 18.
