Canadiens-Bruins: Boston Caps Overtime Comeback, Ties Series at Two

Written by Kamal Panesar. Posted in Blogs - The Rumble

Momentum is an interesting thing in the world of professional sports. When you don't have it you want it, and when you have it you guard it. But sometimes, and perhaps far too often, when a team has it they can take it for granted.

That is when momentum can become dangerous.

After the Montreal Canadiens skated out to a 2-0 lead in their first round playoff series against the Boston Bruins, they had all the momentum in the world. But that picture has changed significantly in the last four days.

Boston won Game 3 in Montreal and the teams faced off last night for their biggest match of the season. A pivotal Game 4 in Montreal where the Habs would jump out to 1-0, 3-1 and 4-3 leads before ultimately losing 5-4 in overtime.

Game 4 Habs Practice Report

Written by Amanda Stein. Posted in Blogs - The Rumble

An optional skate for Habs today.

Missing: Scott Gomez, Brian Gionta, Roman Hamrlik, James Wisniewski, Andrei Kostitsyn and Mathieu Darche.

Scott Gomez was out before the practice working on deflecting pucks in front of the net.

Martin says "a good chance" Halpern to play tonight. He'd be on a line with Eller and Moen. Benoit Pouliot looks to be the odd man out, as Halpern practiced in his place yesterday.

When asked about Pouliot and his struggles in the playoffs (this and last yr)/whether he'd be in the lineup Martin would not comment, simply stating he wont discuss specific players. Though he did feel it okay to discuss the importance of the return of Jeff Halpern.

Scoring First

Written by Kyle Roussel. Posted in Blogs - The Rumble

If you had the impression that the Canadiens like to score the first goal in playoff hockey, you’d be right. If you had the impression that it was a key to their success, again, you’d be right.

In the ‘Jacques Martin era’, scoring first then smothering the opponent is the recipe for success, and indeed the Canadiens have been quite good at it. It also doesn’t seem to matter whether the Habs score early or late in the first period, so long as they score before their opponents.

Going back to last year’s playoffs, and including the first three games of this post-season, the Canadiens have scored the opening goal in 13 of the 22 total games played (59%). Contrast that with the Habs scoring the first goal in just 53% of their regular season games (44 of 82 games). The Canadiens won 73% of the regular season games in which they scored first.
